Excellence is the word that best describes Dr. Derek Hopgood, a psychiatrist for the Program for Assertive Community Treatment (PACT). This program serves clients with complex mental illnesses and significant functional impairments. As a strong advocate of individuals with mental illness, he is compassionate, patient, supportive and respectful. Dr. Hopgood truly puts patients first through home visits, working weekends and following his patients through all elements of their care.
Dr. Hopgood was instrumental in bringing the PACT program to Sault Ste. Marie and has been involved in the training, supervision and guidance of staff since its inception. Through a culture of innovation, he promotes recovery through a community team approach and nurtures purposeful and creative techniques allowing team members to discover how best to engage clients with the ultimate goal of improved health.
Dr. Hopgood’s Medical Degree was completed in London England. From there, he practiced in the Anesthesia department at McMaster University Hospital and subsequently maintained a General Practice in Blind River eventually coming to Sault Ste. Marie and completing specialist training in Psychiatry.
In addition to serving on several committees related to PACT, Dr. Hopgood was instrumental in the development of the local Shadows of the Mind Film Festival. Most recently, he has volunteered to be the physician lead in the STOP program whose mandate is to provide nicotine replacement for those individuals who have mental health issues and wish to reduce or stop smoking. He was an active member of the North East Mental Health Implementation Task Force, and a member of a provincial advisory panel looking at the development of PACT services across the province.
As the PACT leader, Dr. Hopgood works closely with some of the most ill and vulnerable individuals in our community and remains committed to improving the lives of those he serves.
