PSYCHIATRY

In-Patient Psychiatric Units provide individual plans of care for specific patients. Patients are encouraged to participate fully as learning is part of the treatment, and are assisted to understand the impact of mental illness and develop skills necessary for self-care, independent living in the community.


Psychiatric Out-patient Clinic provides psychiatric assessment, consultation and brief follow-up treatment for patients with urgent mental health needs. The clinic is staffed with an Registered Nurse and a Social Worker who work in consultation with the Chief of Psychiatry and visiting psychiatrists from the University of Toronto and McMaster's Hamilton Group.

Psychiatric Orphan Patient Clinic offers assessment and treatment of patients with no family physician or psychiatrist who have a mental health diagnosis who are referred from the Emergency Department. This may include medication monitoring and renewal and follow up until the patient has become stabilized.

Psychology Services provides services to meet the mental health needs of the seriously mentally ill residents of Sault Ste. Marie. The Service is engaged in the assessment and diagnosis of emotional, behavioural and cognitive functioning of individuals and groups. Interventions to facilitate the functioning of individuals and groups may include psychological counselling, group or individual psychotherapy and consultations to assist other health care providers. These services are available to in-patients and discharged patients referred by a physician/psychiatrist.

Psychiatric Outpatient Medication Clinic is responsible for: the administration of long-acting anti-psychotic medications for long term psychiatric patients; Clozaril program coordination and follow up; education, assessment & support for patients and families by appointment; liaison with community partners (CMHA, CMHP).

Psychiatry Offices is responsible for psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, consultation and care plans for primarily adult inpatients including follow up care for discharged patients and outpatients referred to this service.
